The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to announce it’s new Chief Minister for Delhi after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from the United States.
The BJP’s return to Power in the national capital after 27 years has sparked intense speculation over who will lead the new government. The BJP won 48 seats out 70 in the recent Delhi elections marking a decisive victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
According to reports Prime Minister Modi’s visit to US is on 12-13 February will precede the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister, the BJP is likely to stake claim to power next week after Modi’s return from US.
The party has begun deliberations to decide on the new Chief Minister, with BJP president JP Nadda meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday.
The party’s Delhi unit president, Virendra Sachdeva, stated that the decision would be made by the party’s central leadership, adding that all newly-elected MLAs are capable of taking in the responsibilities of the Chief Minister.
Parvesh Verma, who defeated Aam Aadmi party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, is among the contenders, along with other prominent organisational leaders like Satish Upadhyay, Vijender Gupta, Ashish Sood and pawan sharma.
The party may also consider an MLA with a ‘purvanchal’ background, a Sikh, or a woman, depending on the political calculations guiding its top brass.
The BJP’s victory in Delhi marks a significant milestone for the party, which had been out of Power in the national capital for 27 years. The party’s new government is expected to focus on key issues such as devlopment, infrastructure, and governance.
