New Delhi: In a significant operation to curb illegal immigration, the Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of South West District Police detained a Bangladeshi national who had been living illegally in India for the past 15 years. The arrest took place following a meticulously planned operation led by the district’s law enforcement team.
The accused, identified as Ohid, a resident of Brahmin Chiran, PO-Wari, Jatrabari, Dhaka, Bangladesh, had allegedly crossed the border illegally and settled in India under a false identity. Operating under the assumed name Mohd Rohit Sekh, he managed to procure Indian identity documents, including an Aadhaar card and a driving license that falsely established his address in Nadia district of West Bengal.
Secret Intel Leads to Arrest
Acting on confidential intelligence inputs regarding the presence of an illegal foreign national in the Vasant Kunj area, a specialized team from AATS South West District sprang into action. The team was formed under the leadership of Inspector Ram Kumar, in-charge of AATS/SWD, and functioned under the supervision of Vijay Kumar, ACP/Operations, South West District.
The operation team included ASI Vinod Kumar, Head Constables Mohit, Narender, and Hariom. On June 24, 2025, the team located the suspect and approached him for verification. Although he initially presented Indian identity proofs, he failed to provide satisfactory answers during the enquiry.
On detailed and sustained interrogation, the suspect confessed his true identity and admitted to entering India illegally around 15 years ago, with the assistance of an unknown individual who helped him cross the border unlawfully.
Fake Indian Identity and Real Bangladeshi Documents Recovered
Upon further investigation, the team recovered critical documents confirming his Bangladeshi origin. These included a copy of his original National Identity Card of Bangladesh and a Bangladeshi passport bearing his real name and address. These documents played a key role in establishing his actual nationality.
Following the verification and completion of all legal protocols, the accused was detained at Police Station Vasant Kunj South. The South West District Police, in coordination with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Delhi, initiated the process of deportation.
Legal Action and Deportation Process
After verifying his illegal stay and forged identity, the necessary codal formalities were undertaken, leading to the initiation of deportation proceedings. The FRRO has been engaged to expedite the process of returning the accused to his home country.
Officials stated that this operation is part of an ongoing initiative by the South West District Police to identify and take legal action against foreign nationals residing unlawfully in the national capital. Efforts are being made to monitor such individuals who may pose potential security and legal challenges.
Police Statement
“This successful operation showcases the South West District Police’s dedication towards maintaining internal security and enforcing immigration laws. Our officers remain alert and vigilant against all illegal activities, particularly those involving unlawful foreign residence,” said a senior official involved in the case.
Background of the Accused
Ohid, who had lived in India for nearly a decade and a half, had completely integrated into the local environment by assuming a new identity. Authorities believe he may have used his fake documents to access various facilities and possibly employment.
His long stay under a false identity has raised questions about the methods used to obtain forged Indian documents and the networks that assist such illegal migrations.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
The police have reaffirmed their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigration. Operations like this are a part of the larger strategy to ensure that foreign nationals residing in the country do so only under lawful means.
The South West District Police has urged citizens to report any suspicious activity or foreign nationals residing illegally in their neighborhoods. With a robust intelligence network and active cooperation with central immigration authorities, the district police continues to monitor and act decisively against any such threats to law and order.
