New Delhi: A 19-year-old wanted gang member involved in a recent attempt to murder case in Jahangirpuri was apprehended by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Delhi Police’s North-West District after a brief but intense early morning encounter in the Majlis Park area.
The accused, identified as Nitin alias Chor, sustained a bullet injury during the exchange of fire and is now in custody. The police recovered a country-made pistol used in the offence, along with two empty cartridges, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle from his possession.
Firing Incident Linked to Area Dominance
The case stems from a violent incident reported on July 4, 2025, when a stabbing and firing episode took place in Jahangirpuri. According to the police, the victim, Mohd. Azharuddin, along with his friend Tahir, had gone to buy samosas near Sunday Bazar Road in E-Block, Jahangirpuri. While Tahir stepped ahead, Azharuddin waited on a motorcycle when four assailants suddenly emerged from a narrow alley.
Among them were Shivam alias Laddu alias Monu, armed with a pistol, and Nitin alias Chor, wielding a knife. Without provocation, Nitin attacked Azharuddin, inflicting multiple stab wounds on his right arm and left thigh.
As the victim tried to escape, Shivam allegedly fired at him while all four chased and threatened to kill him. A case under FIR No. 678/2025 was registered at PS Jahangirpuri under sections 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
Police Team Tracks Absconding Accused
Acting on specific intelligence, the AATS team launched a manhunt for the absconding suspect. A team under the supervision of ACP (Operations) Ranjeet Dhaka, and led by Inspector Jeetendra Tiwari, was formed.
The team included SI Ravi Saini, SI Akashdeep, ASI Kiranpal, ASI Vinod Kumar, head constables Pardeep, Parvinder, Parveen, Kamal, constable Shubham, and woman constable Dolly.
In the early hours of July 10, at approximately 3:50 AM, the team received a tip-off about Nitin’s presence near Shah Alam Band Marg, close to Majlis Park Metro Station. A trap was laid, and a person matching Nitin’s description approached on a motorcycle.
Gunfire Erupts as Accused Opens Fire
When signaled to stop, the suspect abandoned his motorcycle and tried to flee. SI Ravi Saini instructed him to surrender, but instead, the accused opened fire.
Woman constable Dolly responded by firing a warning shot in the air, urging him again to surrender. However, Nitin fired another round, which struck Dolly’s bulletproof jacket, causing no injury.
As he attempted to reload his weapon for a third shot, ASI Vinod Kumar, acting in self-defence and to protect the team, fired at Nitin’s lower body. The bullet struck his left leg, incapacitating him. The police team quickly apprehended him and recovered the firearm from his possession.
Further Case Registered and Accused Interrogated
Following the encounter, a fresh FIR No. 683/2025 was registered at PS Jahangirpuri under sections 221, 132, 109(1) of the BNS and relevant sections of the Arms Act. The injured accused was shifted for medical treatment and is now in judicial custody.
During interrogation, Nitin admitted to his role in the earlier stabbing and firing incident. He revealed that he committed the offence alongside three others.
Two of the co-accused, both juveniles, had already been apprehended by PS Jahangirpuri officials. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining suspect.
Recovered Items from the Accused
- One country-made pistol
- Two empty cartridges
- One mobile phone
- One motorcycle
Police sources confirmed that Nitin had no prior criminal record. However, the nature of the attack on the victim and his actions during the encounter suggest a pattern of violent behaviour possibly linked to asserting gang dominance in Jahangirpuri.
The Delhi Police have lauded the efforts of the AATS/North-West team for the successful and timely arrest of a dangerous criminal, thus preventing further potential violence in the locality. The operation highlights the department’s readiness and resolve to crack down on gang-related violence in the capital.
