New Delhi: In a significant crackdown on the illicit liquor trade, the East District police arrested a woman bootlegger from the Joshi Colony area of Madhu Vihar. The accused, a known bad character (BC) of the Madhu Vihar police station, was caught red-handed with 200 quarters (180 ml each) of illegal liquor as part of an ongoing special drive against crime and illegal activities.

The operation was carried out by a vigilant patrolling team from Police Station Madhu Vihar, led by the Station House Officer (SHO) and working under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Madhu Vihar. The team included Head Constables Sachin Tyagi and Neeraj, along with Woman Constable Anjana.

Suspicious Movement Leads to Arrest

On the evening of July 2, 2025, during routine patrolling in the Joshi Colony area, the team noticed a woman acting suspiciously while carrying a bulky carton. Her attempt to avoid the police and conceal the package raised suspicions. The officers immediately intercepted her and began questioning her about the contents of the bag. Her evasive answers only deepened the suspicion.

Upon inspection, the carton was found to contain 50 quarters of illicit liquor. Further investigation and searches in the area led the team to recover an additional 150 quarters from a nearby location in Joshi Colony, bringing the total recovery to 200 quarters.

Identified as Repeat Offender

The woman was identified as U, a 40-year-old resident of Mandawali, Delhi. Records revealed that she has a history of criminal involvement, with six previous cases registered against her. She is listed as a BC (Bad Character) at the local police station, further confirming her repeated engagement in unlawful activities.

According to police sources, the accused had been distributing illicit liquor in the area to earn illegal profits. She had been operating secretly from her residence and neighboring locations to avoid police detection. Her actions not only violated the law but also posed a threat to public health and safety.

A case has been registered against her under Section 33 of the Delhi Excise Act (FIR No. 206/2025), and further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and possible accomplices involved in the operation.

Police Action Under Special Anti-Crime Drive

The arrest comes as part of a broader crackdown initiated by the Delhi Police across the city to tackle crime and illegal trade, especially in the run-up to festivals and public gatherings where demand for liquor spikes. The East District Police have intensified their efforts in vulnerable areas to curb the circulation of spurious and illegal liquor.

Officials emphasized that such operations will continue, and strict legal action will be taken against individuals involved in bootlegging and similar offenses.

Appeal to Citizens

In light of this arrest, the Delhi Police have issued an appeal to the public to remain alert and cooperative. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or information related to the sale, storage, or transportation of illicit liquor. Reports can be made anonymously at the nearest police station or via the emergency helpline number 112.

Police have reiterated that public participation is vital in maintaining law and order and ensuring that neighborhoods remain safe from the dangers of illicit trade.

Conclusion

This arrest not only highlights the persistence of illegal liquor operations in certain pockets of the city but also reflects the Delhi Police’s commitment to eliminating such practices. With continued public cooperation and vigilant policing, authorities aim to dismantle networks that profit at the expense of law and safety.

The accused remains in custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify the source and potential distribution network of the recovered illicit liquor.
