New Delhi: In a dramatic late-night operation, the Delhi Police apprehended a gang of inter-state burglars operating across South Delhi, following a high-speed chase and a violent encounter in Hauz Khas. One of the suspects was shot in the leg after attacking a police constable with a knife.
The incident unfolded late Thursday night, when constable Kartar Singh Yadav, posted in Malviya Nagar, was on a routine patrol between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM — part of an intensified crackdown due to a recent spike in house burglaries across South Delhi.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South District), Ankit Singh Chauhan, the gang consisted of three seasoned criminals who specifically targeted unoccupied or locked houses. “They operated with precision and only struck homes that were either locked for a long time or vacant. This made it difficult to track their movement,” said DCP Chauhan.
The gang, believed to be based outside Delhi, would travel into the city under the cover of night, stay at hotels, commit thefts during the early morning hours, and leave the capital shortly afterward. Over two dozen criminal cases related to theft and burglary have been registered against them across various parts of Delhi.
High-Speed Chase Through South Delhi
On Thursday night, Constable Kartar Singh noticed three individuals riding a bike suspiciously in the Malviya Nagar area. When he signaled them to stop, they sped off, prompting a swift 5-kilometer chase that ended in the Hauz Khas Village colony. Noticing the narrow lanes, the burglars attempted to flee on foot.
Kartar Singh, undeterred, followed them into the colony. As he tried to apprehend them, the suspects attacked him with tools typically used for housebreaking, including iron rods and sharp-edged implements. One of the burglars pulled out a knife and slashed at the constable, prompting him to draw his service pistol.
He initially fired into the air to warn the attackers, but when one of them lunged again, he fired at the assailant’s leg, incapacitating him.
The commotion attracted the attention of local security guards and residents, who quickly gathered and assisted the constable in subduing the suspects. All three were taken into custody, with the injured accused immediately given medical attention and then placed under arrest.
Sophisticated Planning and Modus Operandi
Preliminary interrogation has revealed that the gang had been operating for months and used a highly organized method to evade detection. They selected their targets using prior reconnaissance, ensuring minimal risk of confrontation with homeowners.
“The gang’s decision to operate from outside Delhi made tracking them especially difficult,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. “They avoided creating any local footprint and left the city within hours of committing crimes.”
Delhi Police believes the gang may have committed burglaries beyond the capital as well, but that remains under investigation. The suspects are currently being interrogated for more information on their operations, associates, and networks in other states.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from various burglary sites to link the gang with unresolved cases. Police are also examining hotel records and call data to identify their movements before and after the thefts. Mobile phones, burglary tools, and stolen valuables have been recovered from the suspects, which may aid in tracing additional victims and recovering further stolen property.
While over two dozen cases have been linked to the trio so far, officials believe the actual number could be significantly higher.
Recognition for Constable’s Bravery
Constable Kartar Singh Yadav, who sustained minor injuries during the altercation, is being praised for his courage and swift response in a life-threatening situation. “His presence of mind and bravery prevented the criminals from escaping and possibly injuring others,” said DCP Chauhan. The department is reportedly considering a commendation for his actions.
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
Delhi Police has urged citizens to remain alert, especially during early morning hours, and to report any suspicious activity. “Residents must ensure their homes are properly locked, install basic security systems, and stay in contact with local beat officers when leaving homes unattended for long durations,” the DCP added.
This high-profile arrest comes as a significant breakthrough in Delhi Police’s efforts to curb property crimes in the city. Authorities remain committed to dismantling similar inter-state gangs operating under the radar.
Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are not being ruled out.
