Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old American citizen from Texas, has been recognized by the FBI as the perpetrator of a murderous attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. He was in the U.S. military before. Additionally, President Biden stated on Wednesday night that it seems like ISIS served as his inspiration.’
As New Year’s revelers celebrated early on Wednesday, an attacker drove around barricades and hurtled down Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, killing 15 people and injuring scores more, according to officials. Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, called the attack “very intentional behavior.”
The authorities reported that the assailant killed at least 15 people and injured scores more when he crashed a pickup vehicle into a gathering at around 3:15 a.m. According to the FBI, he then got out of the car, a Ford pickup truck that he apparently had hired in Texas, and opened fire on local police. After suffering injuries, two police officers were taken to a nearby hospital.
The New Orleans Police Department said that the assailant was killed at the scene after being hit by police fire.
The deceased attacker was wearing body armor, two sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News. A long gun “with a suppressive device” on it that acted as a silencer was recovered from the scene, law enforcement sources said.
According to New Orleans SP Anne Kirkpatrick, “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” FBI, the incident is being looked into “as an act of terrorism.”
President Biden stated in live remarks at night that the FBI also reported to him that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos to social media indicating that he was inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill.
