Tragedy struck in northern Idaho on Sunday as a sniper ambushed firefighters working to contain a wildfire on Canfield Mountain, killing at least two individuals believed to be members of the fire crew. Authorities later confirmed that the suspected lone gunman was found deceased at the scene.

Deadly Ambush During Firefighting Efforts

Fire crews were dispatched to battle a wildfire on Canfield Mountain, located roughly four miles north of downtown Coeur d’Alene. Approximately 30 minutes into the operation, gunfire erupted, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, initial reports suggest that a sniper deliberately targeted the firefighters.

Sheriff Richard Norris addressed the media shortly after the incident, stating, “Based on preliminary information, we believe there was only one shooter. That individual is now deceased. There is no ongoing threat to the public.”

Governor Condemns ‘Heinous Assault’

Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack in a public statement, calling it “a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.” Expressing grief and solidarity, he added, “I ask all Idahoans to pray for the victims and their families as we await further information.”

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending family notification. Officials have not disclosed a motive behind the shooting, and the investigation remains active.

Public Urged to Avoid Area

As the wildfire continues to burn, the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management has issued an advisory for the public to avoid the Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road. Authorities stressed that the area remains dangerous due to both the fire and the ongoing investigation.

Emergency responders and support crews remain on-site to assist with firefighting and recovery operations.

Community in Shock

Residents of Coeur d’Alene and the broader Idaho community are reeling from the rare and violent event. Such targeted attacks on first responders are virtually unheard of in the region.

The Sheriff’s Office has promised to provide updates as the investigation progresses, and mental health resources have been made available to first responders and their families.

This incident marks a somber reminder of the risks faced by emergency personnel, not only from natural disasters but now, tragically, from intentional acts of violence.
