On Thursday, Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS hospital, Delhi. He was admitted in the Thursday evening after his health deteriorated.

According to sources, the Former Prime Minister (92) was facing “extreme breathlessness” and was shifted to the ICU. Manmohan Singh has not been keeping well since the beginning of 2024, and has been away from public appearances. The Former PM’s last public appearance was in 2024 January, at the book launch of his daughter at the India International Centre (IIC) in Delhi.

Mr. Singh, who served as the finance minister in the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao-led dispensation from 1991 to 1996, is credited as a key architect of the economic reforms effected by the government that broke the stranglehold of socialist-era policies. Manmohan Singh served as the country’s 14th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.

His tenure was marked by robust economic growth, progressive legislation such as the Right to Information Act and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, and pivotal international agreements like the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement.
