“Freedom Of Expression”: India Protests To UK Over Disruption Of ‘Emergency’ Film Screening

On Friday, Mr. Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, in its weekly presser said that freedom of speech and expression cannot be applied selectively. He said while expressing concern over disruptions at Emergency movie screenings in the UK.

Randhir Jaiswal said that India has consistently raised concerns with the UK Government regarding incidents of violent protest and intimidation by anti-India elements, especially with regards to the screening of the film, ‘Emergency’, which was obstructed in several halls in the country.

He further added, “We hope that the UK side will take appropriate action against those responsible. Our High Commission in London remains in regular communication with our community members for their safety and benefit.”

An Opposition Conservative Party Member of Parliament has urged the UK Home Secretary to intervene after his constituents in north-west London were threatened by “masked Khalistani terrorists” who burst into a screening of Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’.

Bob Blackman told the House of Commons that similar disruption of the screenings of the “very controversial” film took place in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Slough, Staines and Manchester.
