Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention today, emphasizing the importance of peace and cultural heritage while addressing the Indian diaspora gathered from around the globe. The event, held in the culturally rich state of Odisha, was marked by a vibrant atmosphere, coinciding with the upcoming festive season in India.
In his opening remarks, PM Modi welcomed delegates and members of the Indian diaspora, expressing his hope that the inauguration song, performed by Grammy-winning artist Ricky Kej, would resonate at Indian diaspora events worldwide in the future. He praised Kej and his team for their heartfelt rendition that encapsulated the emotions of the Indian community abroad.
The Prime Minister spoke about Dhauli, a significant historical site in Odisha, symbolizing peace. He noted that Emperor Ashoka chose the path of non-violence during a time when many sought to expand their empires through warfare. “This legacy inspires India to tell the world that the future lies in Buddha and not in war,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of peace in today’s world.
Highlighting the rich heritage of Odisha, PM Modi remarked, “The great land of Odisha, where we have gathered, is a reflection of India’s rich heritage.” He encouraged attendees to explore the historical sites of Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, the Sun Temple of Konark, and the ancient ports of Tamralipti, Manikpatna, and Palur. He recalled the maritime history of Odisha, where traders once embarked on long voyages to places like Bali, Sumatra, and Java, a legacy commemorated today through the Bali Yatra festival.
Modi expressed his deep appreciation for the Indian diaspora, whom he regards as ambassadors of India. He shared his joy in connecting with fellow Indians globally, stating that the love and blessings he receives from them are unforgettable. He thanked the diaspora for allowing him to represent India proudly on the international stage, highlighting their contributions to their host countries and the respect they garner for their social values.
“India is not just the mother of democracy; democracy is an integral part of Indian life,” Modi asserted. He noted that Indians naturally embrace diversity and integrate into their new societies while respecting local customs and traditions. He praised the diaspora for their honesty and commitment to contributing to the growth and prosperity of their host nations while keeping India close to their hearts.
The Prime Minister highlighted the remarkable progress India has made in the 21st century, stating that over the past decade, the country has lifted 250 million people out of poverty and advanced from the 10th to the 5th largest economy in the world. He expressed confidence that India is on track to become the 3rd largest economy soon.
Addressing the safety and welfare of the Indian diaspora, Modi emphasized that it is India’s responsibility to assist its citizens abroad during crises, a principle that underpins the country’s foreign policy. He commended Indian embassies and offices worldwide for their sensitivity and proactive approach in supporting the diaspora.
“India is now recognized as Vishwa Bandhu,” Modi declared, urging the diaspora to strengthen global connections through increased engagement. He proposed organizing award functions in their respective countries to honor local residents, suggesting that these awards could recognize achievements in various fields such as literature, art, film, and theater. He encouraged the diaspora to collaborate with Indian embassies and consulates to present these awards, fostering personal connections and emotional bonds with local communities.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention serves as a platform for the Indian diaspora to connect, share experiences, and celebrate their contributions to both India and their host countries. The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to the Chief Guest, H.E. Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of Trinidad and Tobago, for her warm video message, which highlighted India’s progress and left a lasting impression on attendees. Modi noted the significance of the current festive season in India, mentioning the upcoming Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Pongal, and Maag Bihu, which contribute to a joyful atmosphere across the nation.
