On 14 December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked on the Congress party in Lok Sabha. Highlighting the “biggest jumla in India’s history,” Modi criticized the Congress for its iconic slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’ (remove poverty), introduced by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her 1971 election campaign.

Modi alleged that the slogan, used across four generations of Congress leaders, served as a political tool rather than a sincere commitment to eradicating poverty. PM claimed that while the Congress benefited electorally from the slogan, it failed to significantly improve the condition of the poor.

The Prime Minister contrasted this with his government’s pro-poor initiatives, such as building millions of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission, providing housing and electricity, and other welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of marginalized communities.
