Google’s $15 Billion Bet On India’s Digital Future
In a major push to strengthen its presence in India, Google on Tuesday announced a $15 billion investment over the next five years, marking its largest-ever commitment in the country. The centrepiece of this investment is a 1-gigawatt data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) campus to be built in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, making it Google’s biggest AI hub outside the United States.
The announcement was made in New Delhi at an official event attended by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and State IT Minister Nara Lokesh. The agreement, signed between Google and the Adani Group, cements a strategic partnership aimed at expanding India’s role as a global AI powerhouse.
Visakhapatnam To Host Mega AI Data Centre Campus
The upcoming facility will span several hundred acres in the port city of Visakhapatnam, a rapidly developing technology and logistics hub on India’s east coast. The 1-gigawatt data centre campus will integrate AI computing infrastructure, renewable energy sources, and high-speed fibre-optic connectivity, making it one of the most advanced digital installations in Asia.
Google said the campus is designed to scale to multiple gigawatts in the future, highlighting its long-term commitment to the Indian market. The infrastructure will support the growing demand for cloud computing, AI model training, and digital services across government, enterprise, and consumer sectors.
“This is the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the US,” said Thomas Kurian. “India’s digital ambitions align perfectly with our global AI strategy.”
A Milestone Partnership With Adani Group
The Google–Adani partnership represents a significant collaboration between global technology expertise and Indian industrial capability. The Adani Group, which already operates several data centres and renewable energy projects, will provide the infrastructure backbone, land, and power integration for the new AI campus.
Gautam Adani, in a statement released later, called the collaboration a “milestone moment for India’s digital economy” and said it would accelerate the nation’s transition towards an AI-driven future powered by sustainable energy.
The partnership also aligns with India’s “Digital India” and “India AI Mission” initiatives, which seek to promote indigenous AI development, data sovereignty, and job creation across emerging technology sectors.

Leaders Hail Project As ‘Transformational’
Describing the project as a “very happy day” for Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the investment would create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and position the state as a leading innovation hub in South Asia.
State IT Minister Nara Lokesh called it a “game-changing investment” that followed a year of intense discussions and relentless effort between the state government and Google executives. “It is a massive leap for our state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing,” Lokesh wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move reflected the government’s long-term vision of making India a global digital infrastructure leader, while Finance Minister Sitharaman highlighted the project’s potential to “enhance India’s AI readiness and attract next-generation investments.”
Rising AI Competition In India
The announcement comes amid intensifying competition among global tech giants racing to build new data centre infrastructure in India. Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have already poured billions into expanding their cloud footprints in the country, while OpenAI recently confirmed plans to set up an India office later this year.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had earlier noted that ChatGPT usage in India has grown fourfold over the past year, making the country one of the fastest-growing AI adoption markets globally.
With over 900 million internet users projected by the end of 2025, India represents one of the largest and fastest-expanding digital ecosystems in the world. Google’s new AI hub, experts say, will not only cater to this domestic demand but also position India as a central node in the global AI supply chain.
A New Era For India’s AI Ambitions
As AI becomes the cornerstone of future economies, Google’s massive investment is seen as a strategic endorsement of India’s potential as an innovation-driven digital power. Beyond economic impact, the Visakhapatnam campus is expected to accelerate research in machine learning, language processing, and sustainable data solutions, furthering India’s goal of becoming a global AI leader.
“This is just the beginning,” Lokesh said — a sentiment that aptly captures India’s growing prominence in the world’s AI revolution.
