The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Friday that the government has decided to allocate space for a memorial dedicated to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night. This decision was communicated to Singh’s family and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

The MHA’s announcement came after Kharge requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conduct Singh’s last rites at a location where a memorial could be built. Kharge emphasized the importance of honoring Singh’s legacy, citing the tradition of establishing memorials for statesmen and former prime ministers at their funeral sites.

Following a Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Kharge and Singh’s family that the government would allocate space for the memorial. However, the MHA noted that the cremation and other formalities can proceed while a trust is established and space is allocated for the memorial.

Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92. He was credited with implementing significant economic reforms during his tenure. The government has decided to accord Singh a state funeral, which took place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi.
