A person was found dead with a body trapped in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane upon its arrival in Maui, Hawaii, on Christmas Eve. Airline and data from FlightAware reported that Flt.202 departed from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday, December 24, approximately at 9:49 am and landed at Kahului Airport at 2:12 pm.

United Airlines confirmed that “a body was found in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on a United aircraft” after it landed. The body was discovered in the wheel well of a Boeing 787-10, that part of the plane is accessible only from the outside. “At this time, it is unclear how or when the individual gained access to the wheel well,” the airline further added that it is cooperating with law enforcement on the incident.

The Police in a statement said that the Maui Police Department is investigating to identify the deceased person on an incoming plane from the mainland this afternoon. State officials authenticated that this issue did not affect the regular operations of the airport.

It remained puzzling how the person entered the wheel well as the compartment was situated underneath the plane which stores the retractable landing gears. The Federal Aviation Department said that the survival rate in the wheel wells is the least due to the low oxygen rate and extreme temperature as flight sails at high altitudes. And there have been similar past death incidents reported too.
