Eight people which consists of five women were killed to honour killing or karo kari, in a span of three days across four districts of Sindh.
Initial reports indicate that in Village Qabil Chachar near Obaro, District Ghotki, Bhoral Chachar fatally shot his daughter-in-law, Razia, and her alleged paramour, Majid Chachar. The culprit voluntarily surrendered to authorities with the weapon, admitting to shooting them upon discovering them together.
Pakistan witnesses hundreds of such killings annually, with victims predominantly being women killed by close family members claiming to protect family honour. These incidents, once limited to rural communities, now frequently occur in urban areas nationwide.
In Bungul Dero, Larkana, a separate incident involved the killing of Riaz Brohi and Samina Brohi. The accused murdered the young man and his own wife in Nazar Muhalla before escaping. Police noted that Riaz Brohi had recently returned from Dubai.
Such killings are often carried out over perceived offences such as elopement, fraternisation with men outside marriage or other infractions of religious and cultural values on female modesty despite campaigns by rights groups and tighter laws.
According to the human rights commission of Pakistan honour killings remained a grave concern in 2024, with Sindh and Punjab recording notably high numbers between January and November, 346 individuals across the country became the victims of such a heinous acts of violence.
