Senior Congress leader and former Haryana Minister Karan Dalal has urged the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to take immediate action against the rampant illegal sand mining taking place along the Yamuna riverbanks. In a detailed letter to the NGT, Mr. Dalal highlighted unchecked mining activity in several districts, including Palwal, Faridabad, Sonipat, and Yamuna Nagar.

Describing the situation as “ongoing and unrestrained,” Dalal accused a deeply entrenched mining network of carrying out what he termed a “systematic and large-scale plunder” of the riverbed. He claimed that the operations are being conducted by a powerful and organized group, operating with complete disregard for environmental laws.

Mr. Dalal’s nine-page communication urged the Tribunal to launch strong and decisive action against those responsible, warning that continued inaction would lead to irreversible ecological damage and embolden those undermining the rule of law.

Environmental activists and local residents have also raised similar concerns in recent months, citing destruction of natural habitats, threat to aquatic ecosystems, and disruption to local communities dependent on the river.
