New Delhi, June 30:
While Sunday evening’s rain brought a much-needed respite from the scorching heat in the national capital, it also resulted in a serious mishap in South Delhi. A large tree collapsed on the road outside Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in Sheikh Sarai Phase-2, Pocket 1, damaging two cars parked nearby.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred shortly after the rain began. A sudden gust of wind may have loosened the roots of the old tree, causing it to fall without warning. The heavy tree landed on two stationary vehicles, severely damaging their roofs and windshields.
Fortunately, there were no occupants inside the cars at the time of the accident, and no injuries have been reported. However, the incident caused a brief panic among local residents and passersby, many of whom had taken shelter nearby due to the rain.
Local authorities, including personnel from the municipal corporation and traffic police, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The area was cordoned off, and efforts to remove the fallen tree were initiated. Cranes and cutting equipment were used to clear the obstruction and make the road accessible again.
Residents in the area have expressed concerns about the condition of several old trees in the locality, especially during the monsoon season. “This could have turned tragic if anyone had been inside the car or walking nearby,” said Ramesh Mehra, a local shopkeeper. “The authorities must take regular action to assess and prune weak or dying trees to avoid such accidents.”
Delhi has experienced sporadic rain showers over the past few days, often accompanied by strong winds. Such weather conditions, while welcome for their cooling effect, also raise concerns about the stability of aging infrastructure and trees in densely populated areas.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for civic bodies to conduct a tree health survey and take preventive measures in vulnerable zones across the city.
