Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs, which was chaired by Congress lawmaker Dr. Shashi Tharoor, yesterday that India does not support former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s criticism of the interim government in Bangladesh and that it continues to be a pinprick in the relationship between India and Bangladesh.
Misri said that India is always focused on the “people of Bangladesh” and that their relationship was not restricted to a “single political party” or a government. According to Misri, Hasina was utilizing “private communication devices” to express her views, and the Indian government was not involved in giving her any facilities or platforms that would allow her to conduct her political activities from Indian territory. This was a part of India’s long-standing policy of not meddling in other nations’ affairs.
Mr. Misri’s remarks acquire significance as Hasina has been making video messages criticizing the interim government in Bangladesh led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
