The Ministry of Culture and France Museums Développement (FMD) have launched a historic collaboration aimed at transforming the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum into a top-tier cultural establishment. This massive project, which is a crucial component of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, will cover over 1,55,000 square meters in New Delhi’s iconic North and South Blocks. This historical precedent, where a government ministry vacated a landmark building to create a world-class museum.
The Prime Minister originally announced the museum during the International Museum Expo in May 2023, and it was further highlighted at the inauguration of Bharat Mandapam in July of the same year. The museum is intended to be a celebration of India’s uninterrupted civilizational history. This agreement calls for India and France to work together on a thorough feasibility study that includes building programming, interpretive planning, and museum case studies.
This project will be greatly influenced by France’s well-known proficiency in museum development, which is best demonstrated by the Grand Louvre. In addition to establishing a dynamic and effective cultural space, the adaptive reuse of the historic North and South Blocks will guarantee the preservation of their architectural legacy.
The Louvre, Grand Palais, and Hôtel de la Marine are only a few examples of France’s experience in adaptive reuse, which will be used to build the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum. It expands on the 2020 Letter of Intent, which placed a strong emphasis on collaboration between museums and heritage.
Additionally, by assuring the effective use of space while respecting India’s historical traditions and built heritage, this program underscores India’s commitment to sustainable and adaptive reuse.
