The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified the country’s stance on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. In a statement released on June 14, the MEA emphasized India’s call for “dialogue and diplomacy” to work towards de-escalation of the situation.

Background
The MEA’s statement comes after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) released a statement condemning Israel’s military strikes on Iran. The SCO statement expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and strongly condemned Israel’s actions, citing violations of international law and the UN Charter.

India’s Position
India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, spoke with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts on June 13, conveying the deep concern of the global community over the tense situation in the Middle East region. Jaishankar urged both sides to avoid escalatory steps and work towards an early return to diplomacy.

The MEA statement noted that India’s position on the matter had been articulated on June 13 and remains the same. “We urge that channels of dialogue and diplomacy be utilised to work towards de-escalation, and it is essential that the international community undertake endeavours in that direction,” the statement read.

SCO Statement and India’s Response
The SCO statement condemned Israel’s military strikes on Iran, saying they targeted civilian and nuclear facilities, causing civilian casualties. India, however, distanced itself from the SCO statement, saying it did not participate in the discussions that led to the statement.

“Keeping that in mind, India did not participate in the discussions on the above-mentioned SCO statement,” the MEA said. This move reflects India’s neutral stance.
