On January 8, 2025, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh engaged in bilateral discussions with his Maldivian counterpart, Mr. Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, in New Delhi. The talks focused on enhancing various dimensions of defence and security cooperation between India and the Maldives. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the joint vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.
During the discussions, Minister Singh emphasized India’s readiness to assist the Maldives in strengthening its defence capabilities. This includes the provision of defence platforms and assets tailored to the Maldives’ national priorities, aligning with India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and the broader vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region). Minister Maumoon expressed gratitude for India’s longstanding role as the Maldives’ ‘First Responder’ in times of need, acknowledging the support provided in enhancing the nation’s infrastructure and training for defence and security personnel.
In response to a request from the Maldivian government, India also delivered defence equipment and supplies to bolster the Maldives’ military capabilities. This handover marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
Minister Maumoon’s visit to India is his first official trip and is part of a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. The discussions have opened avenues for deeper cooperation in defence and security, benefiting both countries and contributing to stability in the Indian Ocean region.
