India is ready to make history with the revolutionary Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), a mission that will showcase the complex art of satellite docking in space.

Scheduled for launch on December 30, 2024, this mission represents a critical landmark in India’s space exploration potential.

The mission involves launching two specially crafted satellites, each weighing about 220 kg, using the workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket. These satellites, named Chaser (SDX01) and Target (SDX02), will aim to dock at an altitude of 470 kilometers above Earth.

This technological accomplishment is specifically important for only three countries—Russia, the United States, and China—who mastered this complex space docking technique.

The mission is far more than a simple technological walkthrough. It is a strategic move towards several aspiring space objectives, which include preparation for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, enabling Chandrayaan-4 lunar sample return missions, and developing the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India’s proposed space station35.
