Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni denied any interference of Musk in the discussions with enterprises regarding the country’s telecom system.

The Italian government is engaging in discussions with various private enterprises, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX, regarding the country’s telecom system. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, considered a close friend of Musk, denied holding any exclusive discussion between the two on the matter.

PM Meloni has defended Musk in various instances, defending him for his political ideology. Despite sharing a close bond with the Tech Whiz, the Italian PM has assured earlier that the policies would not be influenced by his economic interests.

Meloni on Thursday, stated to be using a single lens of national interest to evaluate foreign investments. She clarified her policies to not be influenced by the ideas of the investors. She added that she had not discussed these matters with Musk during her personal conversation with him.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the potential deal with Musk’s political views, Meloni questioned whether the issue is about private investment or the political ideas of the investors. She defended Musk’s political outlook and argued the idea does not pose a danger to democracy until the resources are used by the investor to fund political parties and influence decisions.

Meloni compared Musk with George Soros, who she had earlier alleged to be using his political links with left parties in different countries to be influencing their policies, and asked whether ‘the issue is Musk being rich and influential or that he’s not left-wing’.

SpaceX has been operational in Italy since 2001 and is expected to expand its services in terms of including emergency response during disasters or terrorist attacks. It is speculated that the enterprise is also discussing a five-year deal worth a total of 1.5 billion euros ($1.6 billion).

The expansion of the company has raised concerns among the opposition parties for its ability to handle sensitive information.
