In a recent meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed significant concerns regarding the ongoing delays faced by Indian citizens in obtaining U.S. visas.
Jaishankar characterized this issue as critical and in need of immediate attention, emphasizing that such delays adversely affect business, tourism, and the essential people-to-people interactions that underpin the India-U.S. relationship.
Following the bilateral discussions, Jaishankar highlighted the “strong degree of trust” that exists between India and the United States, noting that this trust should be translated into a more robust partnership.
He stated, “The relationship is not well served if it takes that many days for people to get a visa,” underscoring the widespread frustration in India regarding the visa process.
Jaishankar elaborated on the implications of visa delays, stating that they not only hinder individual travel but also constrain broader interactions that are vital for strengthening bilateral ties.
He reiterated the importance of fostering a partnership that reflects the mutual interests of both nations, particularly in the context of regional and global challenges.

He noted, “We have a very strong degree of trust today between India and the United States,” and emphasized the high level of convergence in their national interests. He expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration on various issues, stating, “There is a lot of good that we can do together.”
Jaishankar also acknowledged the Trump administration’s commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship, particularly in light of the upcoming inaugural events. He indicated that the administration is eager to have India play a prominent role and is prioritizing the partnership.
“It was very clear that the Trump administration was keen to have India present at the inaugural itself,” he said, highlighting the administration’s focus on building upon the strong foundation established during previous engagements.
Reflecting on the historical context, Jaishankar noted that the groundwork for the current relationship was laid during the first Trump administration, which saw significant initiatives taken by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. He remarked, “We have seen that mature in many ways,” indicating a positive trajectory in bilateral relations.
Furthermore, Jaishankar addressed the Quad, a strategic alliance involving India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia, stating that there is a strong desire from the current administration to advance its activities.
