Japan Hit By 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Warning Issued

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Monday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. Provoking authorities to issue a tsunami advisory.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued the advisory for tsunami waves of up to one meter after the earthquake took place in Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushu region around 21:19 pm (12:19 GMT).

The USGS mentioned the expected magnitude to be 6.9 and further said that “there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.”.

The JMA nevertheless advised the public to stay away from coastal areas. “Tsunami can strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or go near coastal areas,” the agency wrote on X.
