It’s been 12 years since the horrific Nirbhaya gangrape case shocked the nation, the Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal said. He also stated that since the Nirbhaya case the incidents of violence have not decreased and women are still not safe in Delhi.
Kejriwal statement comes as the Nirbhaya case marks 12 years, the Nirbhaya case led to widespread protests and calls for change , resulting in Criminal law Amendment act of 2013. The Amendment introduced an expanded defination of rape, introduced stricter punishments and established fast track courts to expedite rape cases.
However despite these efforts the number of the horrific rape cases haven’t decreased. According to the reports of national crime bureau 31,677 cases were reported in 2021 with an average of 86 cases per day.
The Issue of women’s safety still remains as a pressing concern and it’s clear that more stricter laws should be arranged. It’s high time to create a safer environment for women.
