On Saturday, The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal conceded his party’s defeat in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly elections.

Arvind Kejriwal, the former chief minister of Delhi, has accepted the people’s verdict in the Delhi Assembly elections, where the BJP is leading in 48 out of 70 seats, while his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has managed only about 22 seats. This is a significant drop from AAP’s previous wins, where they secured 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020.

Kejriwal congratulated the BJP on their victory and expressed hope that they will live up to the people’s expectations. He also stated that AAP will play the role of a constructive opposition and continue to serve the people. Despite the loss, Kejriwal acknowledged the people’s decision as paramount and accepted the verdict with humility.

In a video message, AAP supremo said, “We accept people’s mandate with humility and I congratulate the BJP for its victory and also hope that it will fulfil the expectations of the people of Delhi.” Reflecting on the work done by the AAP in the past decade, Mr. Kejriwal said, “We have done a lot of work in education, water, electricity, infrastructure to provide relief to Delhiites.”

Mr Kejriwal, 56, a former Indian Revenue Officer and one of the faces of the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement, had stunned observers when he defeated three-time Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit from the New Delhi constituency in 2013.

The giant slayer found himself at the other end this time, however, when he was handed a defeat by the BJP’s Parvesh Verma by a margin of over 4,000 votes.
