On Monday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, delivered a strong critique on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a debate on the Constitution. He warned against blind devotion to a political leader, arguing that such uncritical loyalty could pave the way for dictatorship.

Kharge said, “While devotion in religion may lead to the salvation of the soul, hero worship in politics leads to degradation and can ultimately result in dictatorship. He seems to be paving the way for dictatorship.” Kharge said that PM Modi’s claims on Nehru’s 1951 amendment raise critical questions, especially given the lack of an elected government at the time.

“I challenge him to clarify its purpose. The first amendment, ratified by the provisional Parliament that included Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, aimed to uplift backward classes,” he stated.

Kharge pointed out that PM Modi claimed that, in 1951, when there was no elected government, Nehru introduced an amendment to change the Constitution. “I want to ask him why it was brought forward. The first amendment was ratified by the provisional Parliament, which included Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. It was designed to assist the backward classes,” he explained.

“PM Modi focuses on the past rather than the present. It would have been better if he had highlighted current achievements that strengthen democracy,” Kharge added.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the “number one liar.” He stated, “It was promised that Rs 15 lakh would be deposited in our accounts, but nothing has come. These leaders are misleading the nation and deceiving the people with their lies. The Prime Minister should explain what he has done in the past 11 years to strengthen the Constitution.”
