Kolkata, June 27:
In a shocking incident, a student was allegedly raped within the premises of a prominent law college in Kolkata. The disturbing crime has led to the arrest of three individuals—two current students and one staff member who is also a former student of the institution. The incident has sent shockwaves across the academic community and raised serious concerns about campus safety.
According to police sources, the incident came to light when the victim, a student of the college, filed a formal complaint. An FIR was registered immediately, naming all three accused—Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. Investigators have revealed that one of the accused carried out the assault, while the other two played an active role in facilitating or abetting the crime.
Law enforcement acted swiftly following the complaint, and the three accused were arrested and taken into custody. Police have stated that the suspects will be produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (A.C.J.M.) Court in Alipore, located in the South 24 Parganas district. Authorities have also submitted a plea for police custody, citing the need for a detailed and thorough investigation into the incident.
“The investigation is at a preliminary stage, and we are collecting more evidence. For now, all three individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC related to rape and criminal conspiracy,” said a senior police official familiar with the case.
The law college administration has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident, but sources indicate that internal disciplinary proceedings may follow based on the outcome of the investigation. The incident has sparked outrage among students and student unions, with many demanding stronger security measures on campus and stricter action against those found guilty.
[To ensure the safety and dignity of the victim, her identity has been withheld in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives on sexual assault cases.]
The case has also reignited conversations around the safety of women in educational institutions and the responsibility of college authorities in preventing such heinous acts.
As the legal proceedings begin, all eyes will be on the court’s decision regarding police custody and how the investigation unfolds in the coming days.
