India’s official Oscar entry, “Laapataa Ladies”, has been eliminated from the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. The film, directed by Kiran Rao, failed to make it to the shortlist of 15 features announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Despite receiving great reviews and having its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, “Laapataa Ladies” couldn’t make the cut. The film tells the story of two brides who get swapped on their wedding day during a train ride.
The shortlist includes films from France, Brazil, Canada, and the UK, among others. Notably, British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s “Santosh” has made it to the shortlist, representing the UK.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, and the awards ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
