The White House stated that President Biden has issued 39 pardons and shortened the jail terms of almost 1,500 people, making this the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.
“These commutation recipients, who were placed in home confinement during the COVID pandemic, have successfully reintegrated into their families and communities and have shown that they deserve a second chance,” Biden said.
Biden is anticipated to grant other pardons and commutations in the upcoming weeks. Presidents frequently grant pardons at the conclusion of their terms.
His son Hunter Biden, who pled guilty to federal tax evasion charges earlier this year and was found guilty on three federal weapons charges for lying on a gun application, has previously been pardoned by him.
