Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash at the age of 28, Spanish authorities confirmed on Thursday. The accident occurred shortly after midnight near the town of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, northwestern Spain.
According to Spain’s Civil Guard, the vehicle veered off the A-52 motorway and caught fire. Both Jota and his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, were pronounced dead at the scene. The flames reportedly spread to surrounding vegetation before emergency services arrived.
“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation,” stated the Zamora Provincial Council. “They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”
Born in Porto, Jota began his football journey with Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2016. Though he never played a La Liga match for the Spanish giants, he impressed during loan spells at FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves later signed him permanently, where he quickly became a standout player.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020, where he flourished under manager Jurgen Klopp. Known for his versatility, pressing, and instinctive finishing, he played a vital role in Liverpool’s FA Cup and League Cup triumphs. His impact grew further in the 2024/25 season, when he helped guide the team to the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot.
Internationally, Jota was a key part of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League successes in 2019 and 2025, earning 39 caps and scoring 13 goals. His tireless work ethic and timely goals made him a favourite among fans and teammates alike.
Liverpool FC released a heartfelt statement: “We are devastated by the unimaginable loss of Diogo Jota. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We will continue to support them during this incredibly difficult time.”
