A stampede-like situation unfolded at Sangam during Maha Kumbh’s Mauni Amavasya, sparking fears of 15 casualties as millions gathered for a sacred bath, causing widespread panic and chaos on Wednesday.

While many devotees continued to dip at Sangam and other ghats in the Mela area, the Akharas canceled their customary ‘Amrit Snan’ for Mauni Amavasya in light of the occurrence.

Akanksha Rana, the Mela’s Special Duty Officer informed that after a barrier broke at the Sangam, some people were hurt and taken to the hospital. The precise number of injured people is still unknown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to examine the situation and request for quick support measures.

The most important Maha Kumbh rite, the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, is anticipated to attract almost 10 crore pilgrims.

This year’s ‘Triveni Yog’ is a unique celestial alignment that occurs after 144 years, making the day even more spiritually significant.

The constant chants of mantras and slokas coming from loudspeakers all throughout the Kumbh Mela region were broken at around two in the morning by the screaming sirens of ambulances and police cars racing to the Sangam.
