Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal, who was sitting in a wheelchair, escaped unhurt as the bullet hit a wall. The incident occurred while he was carrying out his “sewadar” duties outside Amritsar’s Golden Temple, he was shot. Although, he escaped unhurt as the bullet struck a nearby wall. Badal was offering ‘seva’ under the religious punishments pronounced for them by Sri Akal Takht Sahib,
His attacker was immediately captured by those on the scene. The attacker has been identified as Narayan Singh Chaura. As far as the attacker’s identity is concerned, Chaura crossed into Punjab in 1984 and played a key role in the smuggling of explosives and weapons into the state. He is reported to have written some seditious fiction and a book on guerrilla warfare in Pakistan.
ADCP, Harpal Singh informed that all cover has been given to Badal and proper security measures are taken.
