South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol received a warning from the main opposition party to step down immediately or risk impeachment just hours after the brief martial law that raised concerns was lifted.
Democratic Party legislator Kim Yong-min stated that the motion will need to be discussed before a vote, which could take place on Friday. Parliament in South Korea is dominated by the opposition which holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament. The opposition consists of the Democratic party with five smaller opposition parties,
Two-thirds of parliament would need to approve the resolution to impeach Yoon, and at least six justices of the Constitutional Court would also need to back it.
Yoon’s senior advisers and secretaries offered to resign collectively and his Cabinet members, including Defence Minister Kim Yong Hyun, were also facing calls to step down, whereas it appeared to be a poorly-thought-out stunt.
