Tragedy struck Mumbai’s coastline on 17 December when a private ferry boat ‘Neelkamal’, sunk near the gateway of India resulting in the death of 13 tourist and the rescue of 53 others.
Reportedly the ferry was carrying around 80 passenger to the Elephanta island when in suddenly wobbled and flipped near Uran, Karanja.
The eyewitnesses described the scene as macabre with passengers screaming for help and trying to stay floating in the Arabian sea waters.
A rescue operation was instantly launched after the ferry sunk , the Indian Navy, Marine police, Indian coast guard and other agencies deploying four helicopters and multiple boats to save the tourists.
The rescue efforts were successful in saving 66 lives, but unfortunately one passenger died. According to the boat owner Rajendra padye every passenger was wearing a life jacket.
The incident raised serious concerns about the safety measures in place for ferry operations in mumbai. An investigation into the incident is likely to follow, which will help determine the factors that led to capsizing of the ferry.
However the Mumbain’s are in shock following the tragedy. The incident serves as a stark reminder of ensuring people’s safety and security.
