Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat said that “kutumb,” or family, is an essential component of society and that every family functions as a cohesive unit in the “Kathale Kul (clan) Sammelan” in Nagpur. He said that we must have more than two, that is three children. This number is important because our society should survive.”

Bhagwat added that our country’s population policy was framed in 1998 or 2002 and it clearly mentioned that no community’s population should drop below 2.1, He emphasized the value of family, stating that if a society’s population growth rate drops below 2.1, it will die. He asserted that population stability was crucial to a society’s survival, citing demographic science to back up his assertion.

Particularly in Bihar, where caste-based censuses and population control methods have been contentious political problems, Bhagwat’s comments provoked political responses. Reacting to the statement, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari responded that the disagreements between the BJP and RSS should be addressed first.
