São Paulo, Brazil: In a powerful and emotionally charged address during the BRICS Summit session on Peace and Security, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the international community to unite against terrorism and uphold global peace as a shared responsibility.
Emphasising the critical role of BRICS in shaping a peaceful future, Modi called for principled, collective, and decisive action to tackle global challenges, particularly the scourge of terrorism.
“Global peace and security are not merely lofty ideals, they are the cornerstone of our collective progress and the foundation of humanity’s shared future,” said the Prime Minister, opening his speech.
He underlined that true human development is only possible in an atmosphere free of violence and instability.
“BRICS has a significant role to play in achieving this goal,” he added, calling on member states to come together and confront the pressing issues of the time.
Condemning Terrorism Without Exception
Referring to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, Modi condemned the act as a “brutal and cowardly assault on the soul, identity, and dignity of India.” He also said, “There must be no hesitation in imposing sanctions on terrorists. The victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be treated equally.”
The attack, which targeted civilians and security personnel, drew widespread condemnation, and Modi used the platform to express his deep gratitude to BRICS nations and other countries that stood in solidarity with India.
In a strong message to the international community, Modi stated, “Condemning terrorism must be a matter of principle, not convenience. If our stance on terrorism changes depending on the location or victim, we betray the very idea of humanity.”
He emphasized that the fight against terrorism must not be selective or politically motivated. PM Modi also stressed the need for firm actions against terrorism, including imposing strict sanctions on perpetrators and their supporters.
“There should be no ambiguity. The victims and the supporters of terrorism cannot be placed on the same pedestal,” he asserted, cautioning that any silence or tacit approval of terrorism—be it for political leverage or ideological alignment—would undermine global peace efforts.
Urgent Call for Global Unity
With rising global tensions from West Asia to Europe, Modi highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian situation in several conflict zones, especially in Gaza.
“The crisis in Gaza is deeply concerning. Regardless of how difficult the circumstances, the path of peace remains the only viable and humane solution,” he said.
Drawing from India’s own cultural and spiritual heritage, Modi invoked the teachings of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi to emphasize non-violence and peaceful coexistence.
“India has no place for war and violence. We believe in dialogue, cooperation, and trust,” he said. Modi stressed that India remains committed to global partnerships aimed at fostering peace, enhancing solidarity, and resolving conflicts through mutual understanding.
India’s Stand on Multilateral Cooperation
Reaffirming India’s commitment to global collaboration, Modi described BRICS as a vital platform for nations of the Global South to voice common concerns and shape the future global order.
He called for deeper coordination among BRICS members in security cooperation, counterterrorism, and sustainable development. “This is a moment for us to move forward together—united in resolve, strong in spirit,” he urged.
He pointed out that only a coordinated and value-driven approach would ensure credibility in the global fight against terrorism.
“If we fail to match our words with actions, we must ask ourselves: are we truly serious about defeating terrorism?” Modi questioned.
Invitation for Next BRICS Summit in India
Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Modi extended a warm invitation to all BRICS leaders and delegates to attend the next BRICS Summit, which will be hosted by India in 2026 under its chairmanship.
“It will be an honour for us to welcome you to India, as we continue to work together for peace, prosperity, and a better future,” he said.
The speech was widely praised for its clarity of vision, emotional strength, and firm stance on terrorism. As global instability continues to challenge the international order, Modi’s address at the BRICS platform reinforced India’s position as a principled and proactive global player advocating for peace, security, and justice for all.
