The Rajya Sabha moved to nominate 12 members to a joint parliamentary committee, marking significant steps towards exploring the concept of ‘One Nation One Election ‘. This committee will be handling two bills proposing simultaneous elections which were introduced in the Lok Sabha.

The nominated memeber of Rajya Sabha are from various parties such as BJP, JD(U), TMC, DMK, AAP, BJD, Congress and YSRCP. Some of the notable names are Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Dr K Laxman from BJP, and Randeep Singh Surjewala Mukul Wasnik from the Congress.

The Lok Sabha has also nominated 27 members to the joint committee including Union Minister Anurag Thakur and P.P Chaudhary from BJP and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the Congress. The strength of the committee has been increased by 8 members. Previously, it was 31 MPs. Now, it’s 39 MPs, allowing more parties to be represented.

The ‘One Nation One Election ‘ aims to establish a mechanism for holding simultaneous elections, which would require a constitutional amendment.

The opposition party member Priyanka Gandhi has been criticising this development bill, calling it ‘Anti Constitutional ‘ and an ‘attack on the federal system’. However, the government denied the claims, saying that this bill would boost development programs by reducing election expenditures.
