President Assad Flees Syria As Rebels Capture Damascus

Syria President Bashar Assad has left the country after opposition forces arrived in Damascus early on Sunday, December 8. On the outskirts of the major city of Hama, after the region was taken by anti-government forces.

Senior Syrian military insiders told Reuters that Assad, who ruled the country with an iron fist for 24 years, boarded a jet to an unidentified location. Officers have reportedly been notified by the army command that the Assad regime has collapsed.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of the Syrian rebel group HTS, has instructed fighters to stay under the prime minister’s authority until these institutions are “officially” turned over. The Syrian Prime Minister has said that he is ready to hand over the government to the opposition forces in a peaceful transition. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, said that Syrian security and military forces had left Damascus International Airport. In the midst of the rebel attack, officials and soldiers left the airport, according to the war monitor, which is based on sources inside Syria.

Residents described gunshots in the capital, and regime loyalists rushed to escape, fearing the fall of the Assad government, according to the Observatory and AFP. As mosques declared the overthrow of the Assad administration, others gathered in public places to rejoice with tears and songs.
