On December 14, Protests rocked Kolkata after the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station.Protests erupt in Kolkata over ex-principal’s rape case bail.

Both were accused in a rape case but were released on bail after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period. The decision has triggered outrage across the city, with Congress activists leading a high-profile procession from the Rabindra Sadan area to the CBI office at Nizam Palace in southern Kolkata.

Carrying party flags and chanting slogans like “We demand justice” and “Bichar chai Tilottoma (Tilottoma wants justice),” the protesters expressed their frustration over what they called the CBI’s “inability” to frame charges against the accused.

The march escalated into a confrontation when the police stopped the protesters from entering the Nizam Palace premises, leading to a scuffle between activists and police personnel. Speaking at the protest, the victim’s father expressed his determination to continue the fight for justice.

“We don’t know what the CBI is planning. We are, however, not losing hope. We will fight till the end to get justice. The legal battle and the fight on the streets will continue in parallel,” he told reporters during a separate protest in Salt Lake.

The case has struck a chord across the city, with many questioning the CBI’s handling of the investigation. Congress leaders criticized the central agency for its delay, which allowed the accused to secure bail. “The fight is not just legal; it is a battle for justice and accountability,” said a senior Congress leader participating in the protest.

Protests are expected to continue in the coming days, as civil society groups and political parties join hands to demand justice for the victim and action against investigative lapses.
