On January 24, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially launched ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’ from South Block in New Delhi.
This advanced automated system is designed to integrate inputs from various ground and aerial battlefield sensors, ensuring accurate data processing to confirm the authenticity of information, eliminate redundancies, and create a unified Common Surveillance Picture of the battlefield.
The system operates over a secure Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network, significantly enhancing battlefield transparency and transforming future military operations.
The SANJAY system is equipped with cutting-edge sensors and sophisticated analytics capabilities. It aims to monitor India’s extensive land borders, prevent unauthorized intrusions, and assess situations with unmatched precision.
This innovative system is expected to serve as a force multiplier in the realms of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), enabling military commanders to effectively conduct both conventional and unconventional operations within a Network Centric Environment. The introduction of SANJAY marks a significant advancement towards achieving data and network centricity within the Indian Army.
Developed collaboratively by the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY embodies the spirit of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) and follows the Indian Army’s initiative for a ‘Year of Technology Absorption’.
The system is set to be deployed across all operational Brigades, Divisions, and Corps of the Indian Army in three phases, starting from March to October 2025, which has been designated as the ‘Year of Reforms’ by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The project has been executed under the Buy (Indian) category, with a total investment of Rs 2,402 crore.
The flagging-off ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of State for Defence Mr. Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar, and Chairman & Managing Director of BEL Shri Manoj Jain, along with other senior officials from the MoD and BEL.
The SANJAY system is poised to revolutionize the way the Indian Army conducts surveillance and reconnaissance operations, providing a comprehensive and real-time overview of battlefield conditions. By leveraging advanced technology and indigenous development, the Indian Army aims to enhance its operational capabilities and maintain a strategic edge in an increasingly complex security environment.
As the Indian military continues to modernize and adapt to new challenges, the introduction of SANJAY represents a significant step forward in the integration of technology into military operations. The system’s ability to provide timely and accurate information will empower commanders to make informed decisions, ultimately contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the Indian Army’s operations.
The launch of SANJAY marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of military technology in India. With its state-of-the-art features and commitment to self-reliance, the system is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing national security and ensuring the preparedness of the Indian Army in the face of emerging threats.
