Russia has partially evacuated some diplomatic staff from Syrian territory while keeping the embassy open and functional.
The airstrikes were aimed at Iranian-backed militants and weapon houses. Russian warplanes flew the diplomats out of the Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia, Syria. The base has been seized before, but the latest strikes were more severe. Israel carried out these airstrikes overnight, targeting several spots in Syria. The goal was predominantly to stop Iran from sending weapons to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
The situation in Syria is still erratic, with numerous groups fighting to take control. Amidst this, Russia has been supporting the Syrian government, while Israel targets Iranian-backed militias.
Russian officials are currently in talks with some opposition groups in Syria to ensure the safety of their diplomats and bases.
