In a major turn of events in Syria, after its former President Bashar al-Assad fled and Syrian rebels took control of Damascus on Sunday, Russia is said to be in contact with the new authorities.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov clarified that Russia is in contact with those currently controlling power in Syria. He informed that Russia is looking forward to ensuring the security of its military bases in Syria and maintaining its diplomatic ties.
He asserted that Russia has always supported Syria, even during the civil war however, he admits that this only deteriorated the situation and led to what it is today. He says that despite this situation, both countries need to proceed with today’s reality.
