Russia launched an assault on Ukraine within the first three days of 2025 with firing over 300 attack drones and nearly 20 missiles, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Most of the drones neutralised, but some managed to fulfil their goals. Through a post of X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “In the third year of the Russian invasion, over Ukraine, drones have become significant tools in war, reshaping strategies and transforming the battlefield into a sci-fi zone. Drones have become one of the most important tools in the fight against the occupier, being heavily used in both front lines and behind enemy lines.”

Drones have proven to be a game changer, saving lives, compensating for shortages in artillery, and enabling Ukraine to defend itself against Russian occupiers.

The frontlines have become a deadly no man’s land with drones being the preferred weapon for striking troops, vehicles, and ammunition depots. Ukrainian forces are fighting back with counter-drone technologies, including jamming devices and anti-drone rifles.

Russia’s use of Iranian-made Shahed drones has stretched Ukraine’s air defences and infrastructure to the limit. But the UK is fighting back with new technology.

The British Army has been testing a powerful tool that can stop swarms of drones at a lower cost than traditional methods. This new tool has been successful in tests and can target threats from far away. If it’s used in Ukraine, it could be a major help in defending against Russian drone attacks.
