The Supreme Court of India asked the Uttar Pradesh government to maintain peace and harmony as it dealt with a plea filed by the Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid Committee seeking a stay on a district court-ordered survey of the mosque.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna addressing the Additional Solicitor General (ASG), KM Nataraj, said that they should see that no chaos is made and everything remains in peace. They asked the trial court to not proceed with the matter and told the mosque committee to approach an appropriate forum against the district court-ordered survey .In response, Nataraj assured of law and order.

The trial court order came following claims that the mosque was built by Mughal emperor Babar in 1526 after demolishing a temple that stood there. According to the apex court, an appeal shall be listed three working days after it is filed whether it is preferred before the Allahabad High Court or another forum. The matter will be relisted in the week starting January 6 after the Supreme Court clarified that it has not issued a judgment on the merits.
