SC Orders Special NEET Counselling Amid Acute Doctor Shortage In India

The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Medical Counseling Committee to conduct a special counselling round to fill vacant medical seats, addressing the country’s acute doctor shortage. The court directed authorities to complete admissions by December 30, ensuring precious medical seats aren’t wasted.

The Court observed that precious medical seats should not go to waste, especially when the country is dealing with a shortage of doctors. The supreme court bench, including justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, directed MCC to add another round of counselling to fill the vacant seats of National Eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) undergraduate courses.

The Apex Court also extended the deadline for NEET-UG admissions till 30th December.  The court has set some ground rules for the special counselling round: NO direct admissions in college, admissions should only be conducted through state authority.

Admissions will only be made from waitlisted candidates, Vacant NRI seats will be converted into general category quota and be filled through state admissions authorities.

The Supreme Court’s order is seen as a significant step towards addressing the doctor shortage in India. As a boon through this scheme, thousands of Medical aspirants will get another chance to secure a seat in a medical college.
