End of an Era for Bastian Bandra
One of Mumbai’s most glamorous culinary hotspots, Bastian Bandra, has officially shut its doors, marking the end of an era in the city’s fine-dining and nightlife scene. The restaurant, co-owned by Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, had long been a favorite among celebrities, business elites, and influencers. Known for its eclectic menu and buzzing atmosphere, it became an iconic venue where paparazzi often camped outside to catch glimpses of Bollywood stars dining and socializing.
Shilpa Shetty, in an emotional Instagram post, confirmed the closure of the restaurant. “This Thursday marks the end of an era as we bid farewell to one of Mumbai’s most iconic destinations — BASTIAN BANDRA. A venue that gave us countless memories, unforgettable nights, and moments that shaped the city’s nightlife now takes its final bow,” she wrote.
Farewell Celebration
To honor the legacy of the space, Shetty announced a farewell evening curated for loyal patrons. The final service included a mix of nostalgia and festivity, ensuring that the last night remained etched in the memories of visitors. Shetty added that although Bastian Bandra is closing, her other outlet, Bastian at the Top, will continue operations. “Our Thursday night ritual Arcane Affair will continue next week at Bastian at the Top, carrying forward the legacy in a brand-new chapter with brand new experiences,” she shared.
Celebrity Hotspot
Over the years, Bastian Bandra was synonymous with glitz and glamour. Frequented by actors, cricketers, and media personalities, it redefined Mumbai’s dining culture. The restaurant’s reputation went beyond food; it was about exclusivity and the chance to be part of Mumbai’s buzzing social circuit. From Sunday brunches to late-night parties, the venue offered something unique to its clientele, which ensured its steady popularity.
The Fraud Allegations
The closure, however, comes at a time when controversy has struck Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra. Both were recently named in a ₹60 crore fraud complaint filed by businessman Deepak Kothari, director of Lotus Capital Financial Services Ltd. According to Kothari, the couple allegedly borrowed the amount under the pretext of expanding their business ventures but instead used the funds for personal expenses.
The allegations added a cloud of uncertainty around Shetty and Kundra’s ventures, though their legal team has strongly refuted the charges. Advocate Prashant Patil, representing the couple, denied any wrongdoing, stating, “All allegations are false. We have not received a copy of the FIR so far. When we receive it, we will adopt the necessary legal remedies. This transaction dates back 7-8 years. If someone truly felt wronged, they would not wait nearly a decade to file a complaint. We have documentary evidence to support our case.”
Legal Standpoint
The lawyer also emphasized that the matter should be addressed before the Economic Offences Wing (EoW) if there are genuine concerns. “We too will present our truth before investigating agencies. The truth will be out,” Patil asserted, underscoring that the couple remains confident in clearing their names.
While the timing of the restaurant’s closure coincides with the controversy, Shetty has not drawn any direct link between the two. For her, the decision is more about celebrating the journey of Bastian Bandra and channeling energy toward sustaining and expanding other ventures.
Looking Ahead
Though the Bandra branch has closed, the spirit of Bastian lives on through Bastian at the Top. The restaurant continues to attract attention with its panoramic views, curated experiences, and luxurious offerings. The Shetty-Kundra business empire also spans various industries, and despite recurring controversies, Shilpa Shetty remains a prominent figure in entertainment, fitness, and hospitality.
For Mumbai’s food lovers, the end of Bastian Bandra is bittersweet — a farewell to a venue that symbolized more than just dining. It was about lifestyle, glamour, and the city’s love for a good night out.
