South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced to lift the martial law which he had imposed earlier. Amid a tense night of political drama, the South Korean Cabinet of ministers lifted the martial law decree on early Wednesday.
The President took a vow to eliminate “anti-state” forces a day before, justifying this he imposed martial law. He said that he initiated the safeguard from North Korea. To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements plundering people’s freedom and happiness, I hereby declare emergency martial law,” Yoon said.
This created chaos, and political tensions between Yoon’s People Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party in South Korea escalated shortly after the announcement.
As a result of this, helicopters were observed landing on the Seoul National Assembly’s roof after martial law was declared, and the building was entirely sealed.
The military declared that political parties and parliament would not be allowed to engage in any activities, and that media outlets and publishing houses would be directly supervised by the martial law government, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
