On Wednesday, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, the acting minister for refugees in the Taliban’s interim regime, was killed in a blast in Kabul. The blast also claimed the lives of three of Mr. Haqqani’s bodyguards.

The blast occurred near a government facility, and it is suggested that the attack may have been a targeted attack due to the ongoing conflict between the Islamic State and the Taliban. Two senior Taliban leaders have confirmed the demise of Haqqani. He was a prominent figure in the Haqqani Network and the uncle of Afghanistan’s Interior Minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.

His network has been linked to numerous high-profile attacks throughout Afghanistan’s two-decade-long war. His death marks a notable point in the ongoing power dynamics within Afghanistan. The U.S. State Department has consistently highlighted his network as a threat to the world.
